Professor Megson has a degree in Physiology from the University of St Andrews. His PhD investigated the release of nitric oxide from novel drugs (University of St Andrews, completed in 1993) and led on to a postdoctoral appointment to continue this drug development work. In 1995, Professor Megson was awarded a BHF Junior Research Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, prior to his appointment to a lectureship and subsequent promotion to a senior lecturer position at the same university. In 2006 Professor Megson was appointed to a Chair at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) with the remit of initiating and building health research from scratch. He is currently Head of Health Research and Innovation at UHI and leads a team numbering ~30 individuals. Prof Megson’s personal research interests include the mechanisms underpinning nanotoxicity and the role of antioxidants in management of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
